About the Society

RaD logoThis website provides a virtual information point about the ancestral homeland of the MacAskills of Rubh' an Dùnain on the Isle of Skye in the Western Isles of Scotland.

It was created by the MacAskills of Rubh' an Dùnain Society, a small not-for-profit organisation constituted in May 2006 by descendants of Iain 'Dubh' MacAskill, tacksman at Rubh' an Dùnain in 1683. Family relatives later went on to found the Talisker Distillery on Skye.

A New Community

Our objective was, and remains, to maintain a sense of identity and kinship and to foster awareness, understanding and on-going research into Rubh' an Dùnain itself.

We would like your views about how we can continue the repopulation of the landscape through a dynamic new virtual community – Friends of Rubh' an Dùnain.

Our family Society totals more than 100. Many continue to live and work on the Isle of Skye, but others, like the Scottish diaspora, are spread to all quarters of the world. We have hosted two reunions – both attracting more than 130 guests from every continent.

The Society is entirely self-supporting and receives no grants or external financial assistance. It levies no membership charge.

Support of any kind is always welcome. Contact us.
